Snow!

By eija | October 19, 2009|

This isn’t the post I was planning to write today. However, life is full of surprises – like this one that said good morning to me today:

Snow!

Sigh. There was about 7 cm/3 inches of snow on my car. And more kept coming all the time when I tried to get it off. When I had brushed it off once I had pretty much the same amount on me – and after just walking back to the house, leaving the dogs inside and taking my bag – the windows were all covered again (and so was I – goodbye any hairdo!).

The highway had not been ploughed yet. When turning there I waited for another car from the opposite direction to turn up first, on his right – only he almost turned on his left, at me. There was no question about it: He was still driving with summer tyres! Ghhhh… those “#¤#%&  suicide candidates… On the motorway people drove only about 60-70 km/h. Good for them – less corpses by the end of the day! Because yeah – this is one of those days when Finns once again wake up to realize they live in a country of snow and ice. And that living here requires winter tyres and certain type of driving skills. I know what they’re saying in the news tonight again:

X hundred smashed cars today

I mean that’s if we’re lucky. If not, there will be lost lives, too.

Last night I dug out the girls’ winter clothes. Miss 12′s coat is once again too small for her and what’s left of her winter shoes really isn’t much. Miss 9 needs trousers and probably winter shoes too. Sigh. This is the time of the year when I should immigrate somewhere warmer (but not too warm!). I mean…

I can do with the dark. I’ll just turn on the lights. I can do with the wetness – I’ll wear wellies. But I can’t do with the cold: That means I have to wear pantyhose! And oh, do I ever hate those things…

Just pulling them up makes them go broken (yeah, as we speak I’m wearing pantyhose with a hole on my thigh). The seams always crawl under my toes and that feels horrid. Inside it’s too hot to wear them (Finns and heating………) and outside still not warm enough. They’re tight and uncomfy and they just simply make me go crazy and feel awkward!

Ah, well. I wore the wrong boots to work today. By the time I got here my socks were all wet. So much for the wellies…

But things sure looked weird out there. The yellow leaves in the trees, all covered with the fluffy whipped cream. Sadly I didn’t have the right lens with me and it was still too dark but I did take a couple of photos on the way to work, so I’ll post something in my photoblog later if they came out at least somewhat decently.

Have a good week y’all!

I know it`s dangerous for getting about in – but – that picture makes it look really beautiful.

Hope you manage to stay warm and safe.

Looks great from where I’m sat but yeah that’s a few hundred miles away … where that isn’t going to happen only in dreams. does look very pretty though

David we had a very slippery day last week… I think it was Thursday. Slippery is what I probably hate the most.

Thanks Ivy, warm and safe :) And yes, it’s beautiful. But that’s Christmas-beautiful – and Christmas is still nowhere near (thank God for that!).

Lorna I agree, this is too early for snow like this. You should’ve seen the flakes – some of them were seriously big – almost the size of a paper hankie! Changing the clock isn’t that bad – at least I get to sleep an hour later every morning. That is, if I manage to sleep in the first place… :(

Do you not have thermal underwear in Finland? It beats pantyhose in warmth and longevity.
